Nokia to announce mapping deal with Oracle

Nokia to announce mapping deal with OracleAccording to a new Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report, Finnish handset-maker Nokia and bigwig tech company Oracle have apparently worked out an agreement under which Oracle's customers will be able to access Nokia's mapping technology.

As per the WSJ report, citing confirmation by a spokesperson of Nokia, the Nokia-Oracle deal - which comes close on the heels of Nokia's similar mapping agreements with Groupon and Amazon - will probably be announced at the forthcoming OracleWorld conference in San Francisco on Monday.

With the Nokia-Oracle deal underscoring the potential for the Oracle customers to access data and location services offered by Nokia, Oracle will clearly draw attention to the fact that the deal implies that Oracle's customers can use Nokia's maps for integration into the company's applications.

Nokia's mapping-services agreement with Oracle is an indication that the handset-maker has got the momentum going for its thus-far unnoticed assets; that is, its geolocation and mapping services.

From Nokia's perspective, if the company's mapping services are lapped up by Oracle's customers, there is a chance that tech executives may show an inclination for Nokia's forthcoming Windows 8-based handsets also. As such, Oracle will give Nokia's geolocation services a robust enterprise distribution which is in accord its Microsoft partnerships on maps.
