Indian men smoking like never before

Indian-men-smokingNew York, Jan 8 : While the US is upbeat at reducing number of tobacco users, there has been an alarming growth in the number of daily smokers globally, including in India.

More people are smoking in India now, 110 million, compared to just 74.5 million smokers over three decades back, claimed a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).

India, with 12.1 million women smokers in 2012, compared to just 5.3 million in 1980, had more women smoking than any other country except the US, it added.

Telenor appoints Morten Karlsen Sorby as Uninor chief

morten-karlsen-sorbyNew Delhi, Jan 8 : Norwegian telecom service provider Telenor Wednesday appointed its strategy and regulatory affairs head Morten Karlsen Sorby as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its Indian telecom arm Uninor with immediate effect, a company statement said here.

Morten Karlsen Sorby replaces Sigve Brekke who has served as interim chief executive officer of Uninor since early November 2013.

Telenor holds a 74 percent stake in Telewings Communications, which manages and operates Uninor.

New genetic causes of neonatal diabetes found

neonatal-diabetesLondon, Jan 8 : A rare disease, neonatal diabetes occurs in the first six months of life - affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 births.

In a ground-breaking study, researchers at University of Exeter Medical School in Britain revealed two new genetic causes of neonatal diabetes.

Neonatal diabetes is caused by a change in a gene which affects insulin production.  This means that levels of blood glucose (sugar) in the body rises dangerously high.

The team discovered that mutations in two specific genes which are important for development of the pancreas can cause the disease.

Stop manipulations: Hrithik on business of 'Krrish 3'

Hrithik-RoshanMumbai, Jan 8 : Bollywood superhero Hrithik Roshan has rubbished reports that the box office collection of his latest movie "Krrish 3" have been inflated, adding that "derogatory manipulations need to stop".

Hrithik took to his official page on social networking website Facebook Tuesday night to clear his stand on the rumours.

"Some from the industry and certain sections of the media are hellbent on putting me, my father (Rakesh Roshan) and 'Krrish 3' down.  I have maintained my silence until now but these derogatory manipulations need to stop," the 39-year-old posted.

Sprint announces ‘Framily Plan’

Sprint Framily PlanSprint on Tuesday announced a new plan called `Framily Plan,' which allows members of family, friends and neighbors to join up and enjoy savings on their monthly bills.
