Hong Kong - A Hong Kong police officer from an elite unit has been found dead with his elderly grandmother, police said Thursday.

The 29-year-old officer and the 82-year-old woman were discovered unconscious next to a stove burning charcoal in his smoke-filled apartment Wednesday afternoon.

Both were declared dead at hospital. The officer, Ma Chun-pong, was a member of the Special Security Unit at Hong Kong airport and provided counselling to fellow officers.

Media reports said their deaths were believed to be a suicide pact or that Ma killed himself and his mother because of relationship problems he was having.

A note is believed to have been found indicating that Ma had intended to commit suicide.

Police said Thursday the case was still under investigation and was still being classified as "body found."

Two other police officers have killed themselves this year in the city of 6.9 million. (dpa)
