Sangar (Jammu), Nov.26 : Residents of Sangar Village in Jammu have been looking for a proper bridge for over decades.

Sangar and its adjoining villages, comprising 20,000 people, in Jammu are compelled to depend on a rope bridge as their sole medium of connectivity.

In 1983, the only bridge that was constructed here by the then-ruling government was washed away during a flood. A steel trolley was then fitted by the Public Works Department that is used even today.

The trolley has a pulley attached to it and has to be toed with bare hands. Many end up wounding their limbs in this process.

Villagers are a disappointed lot, as this bridge has led to injuries to many people after their hands get stuck in the pulley. The bridge is crucial for everyone here because all the government departments, hospitals, schools etc. are on the other side of the bridge.

"We face difficulties crossing the bridge every day. We don't have any other means of transportation to go to the other side. Our children, elderly people face lots of problems. Our children can't go to school during rains that affects their studies. We don't even have road facility, so we are having lots of problems," said D.S. Rai, a villager.

"During elections many ministers have promised to rebuild the bridge but after the elections no one cares to fulfill their promise," said Purushottam Singh, another villager.

The local legislator of Nagrota says the demand for construction of a bridge has always fallen on deaf ears.

"The government claims it has huge amount earmarked for roads and bridges. But the bridge here have not been provided till date. We raised the issue in a board meeting with the chief minister and in the Assembly," said Jugal Kishore Sharma, the local legislator, Nagrota.

Yet again a plan of 9 crore rupees has been submitted by the legislator to the Government for rebuilding of the bridge which awaits approval. Hopefully, the 'Bridge on Rope' will spot a transform after all. (ANI)
