India May Remove Restrictions On Internet Telephony
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has paved a way for cheap call rate in the country.
TRAI has permitted internet service providers (ISPs) to offer unrestricted internet telephony in India. The government is thinking over the recommendations of TRAI to provide cheap call tariffs to the consumers.
The long distance call tariffs are expected to come down around 50 paise a minute following the decision of the government. The price of international calls is also expected to come down by half of the original tariffs.
Earlier internet telephony is allowed between PC’s in India. The relaxed rules can now cover PSTN (public switched telephone networks) and mobile networks in the country. Thus the call from PC to mobile is possible according to new norms. The international calls from PC to mobile are already allowed in the country.
The mobile service providers of the country have opposed the move of the government. They apprehended that it would reduce the voice rates and adversely hit there business. The proposal of TRAI is yet to approved by Department of Telecommunications (DOT). The chairman of Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), Rajesh Chharia has welcomed the recommendations of TRAI.
