Mumbai will have tunnels to control traffic
From time to time Indian government has made various plans to control the traffic problem in metros. Mumbai has continuous problem of unmanageable traffic. Till now flyovers were considered a better solution than a tunnel. But the new technology has solved various problems in constructing tunnels. Now Mumbai authorities are planning to construct tunnels to solve traffic problem. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Tuesday after inaugurating the city's first skywalk in suburban Bandra.
"Earlier it was difficult to build tunnels but with new technology it is not that complex,"
He told that MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) is already working on plans to build tunnels. The Bandra-Worli Sealink, which links suburban Bandra to Worli in central Mumbai, will be ready soon and the government was looking at providing a possible underground tunnel to the business district of Nariman Point from Worli. The Chief Minister futher added "A flyover or bridge could not only have an adverse impact on the environment or in some cases could affect the view.”
He gave example of the Bandra-Worli sealink where contruction was delyed due to environmental concerns which increased the construction cost upto 1800.The MMRDA is also studying the feasibility of a tunnel to Nariman Point in south Mumbai.
