Meet Blue Origin’s 'New Glenn', Rocket to Take Satellites and Crew into Space

Blue Origin’s rocket family is going to be extended by one, announced Jeff Bezos in a statement on Monday (September 12). The new reusable rocket of the company will be used to take passengers into space.

In additions, New Glenn rocket, named after John Glenn, will also serve the purpose of launching satellites into space. Glenn was first American to orbit earth. The Blue Origin founder also disclosed in a company newsletter about two- and three-stage versions of the rocket. It is believed that both the versions of the New Glenn rocket will be better than SpaceX rocket.

For designing and developing the new rocket, Blue Origin studied its New Shepard rocket, which since November last year has four times successfully landed on surface. Now, the company has announced to conduct another test on the rocket where rocket’s crew capsule will be ejected.

While providing more information on New Glenn rocket, Bezos said that it is a step forward in case of range and size. Its diameter is 23 feet, or around 7 meters. The three-stage version will allow the company to plan missions beyond low-earth orbit. Its seven BE-4 engines allow it to liftoff with around 3.85 million pounds of thrust, added the billionaire entrepreneur.

The two-stage is about 270 feet tall, and it is powered by a single, vacuum-optimized BE-4 engine. “The three-stage New Glenn is 313 feet [95 m] tall. A single, vacuum-optimized BE-3 engine, burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, powers its third stage. The booster and the second stage are identical in both variants”, said Bezos in a statement.

Blue Origin has planned to launch New Glenn from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
