Indonesia and Pacific to have Total Solar Eclipse next week
Total solar eclipse can be witnessed at select locations next week. However, if you want to witness it, you will have to take a journey to Indonesia and over the North Pacific Ocean. An individual should never look directly at the sun, even with sunglasses on during solar eclipse.
In case you are planning to go to Indonesia for the eclipse, you would be on the west of the international dateline, which means the calendar date is going to be Wednesday, March 9. The narrow path of totality is the site where the moon's dark cone of shadow, known as the umbra, tracks throughout the Earth. It starts here, stretching eastward across the Pacific Ocean.
Nearly three-quarters of the way east along the eclipse track, it goes over the dateline and likewise, the date will change from Wednesday, March 9, to Tuesday, March 8.
Next week’s total solar eclipse can be watched live in a webcast hosted by the Slooh Community Observatory. The Slooh broadcast is going to start at 6 pm on March 8, stretching till 9 pm. The webcast can also be seen on Space.com, courtesy Slooh.
On March 9, the moon's dark umbra shadow is going to first strike the surface of Earth over the eastern Indian Ocean nearly 900 miles west of Sumatra at 0017 GMT. Just 2 minutes after that, the shadow will span throughout central Sumatra and thereafter enveloping the quite smaller islands of Bangka and Belitung.
Eclipse totality will come to an end in only 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
