Restaurants in New York City to Have New Warning Symbol in Their Menu
If you are a regular visitor to restaurants in New York City, then you will notice something new on the menu cards i.e. a warning symbol. This warning symbol will appear on menu items that will have more than 2.3 grams of sodium.
The warning symbol is a white salt inside a black triangle and will appear next to food items that contain more than 2.3 grams of sodium, which is the maximum recommend intake one should have in a single day.
The New York Times reports that the symbol has already started to appear starting on Tuesday. This new regulation applies to restaurants that have 15 or more outlets across the nation.
The new regulation affects about a third of the city’s eateries, PIX11 in New York reported. About 10% of the menu items in those restaurants will need the warning symbol.
According to the city government, an average adult in New York City consumes about 40% more sodium than the maximum intake one must have in a single day.
This new law was approved in September and is the first such in the country that require the eateries to put salt warnings on food items.
The law also requires the restaurants to post a sign warning diners that too much sodium can cause health problems.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans that were published in 2010 by the US departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, an average adult must consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium on daily basis.
