Climate change threatens Snow Leopard

Just 2,500 adult snow leopards are now left in the wild. Such short number has led the World Wildlife Fund to raise concerns. It has unveiled that climate change is the main reason for causing threat to snow leopards.

Experts shared that habitat of snow leopards is spread over 12 central Asian countries. If climate change’s severity level will increase then local communities will be forced to shift up the mountains, where there is snow leopard territory. These changes will make snow leopards to adjust in new human settlements.

The World Wildlife Fund said, “Increased habitat loss and degradation, poaching and conflict with communities have contributed to a 20 percent decline in the population in the past 16 years and left the species barely hanging on in many places”. It also said that but no one checked for climate change, which has leveled up the risk for threats.

The World Wild Fund has said that the climate change can bring significant changes in the mountains’ water flow in high altitude of the snow leopard. It will not only be threatening for this species, but also for humans as well as for other species.

Brad Rutherford, executive director of the Snow Leopard Trust, said they do not have to choose between humans and snow leopards, as helping the latter means helping humans. Many nations are taking measures to save snow leopards by starting projects.
