Massive Asteroid to Whizz Past Earth This Halloween

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that a large asteroid will whizz past earth this Halloween. As per a document posted online by the space agency, the asteroid, discovered about three weeks ago, will approach our home planet within about 304,471 miles on October 31.

Astronomers discovered the asteroid, dubbed 2015 TB145, with the help of Pan-STARRS telescope. NASA said the asteroid will zoom past earth with a speed of about 35 km/s. The asteroid measures about 918 to 2,034 feet in diameter, as per the space agency.

NASA also noted that 2015 TB145 will be the closest object to flyby our home planet since 2006. That time, an object, dubbed NEO 2004 XP14, flew past at a distance of about 1.1 lunar. After the asteroid's flyby on October 31, no space object is going to come as close again until 2027, said NASA.

Confirming the flyby on Halloween, the space agency said it is planning to take picture of the asteroid. In the document, NASA said, "The fly-by presents a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object".

It will be challenging for small telescopes to capture the asteroid's flyby. Skywatchers who want to get a glimpse of the passing 2015 TB145 must have high quality telescope, NASA added. A number of astronomers around the world are hoping to use the rare opportunity to study the object.
