Studies Show Promising Results of Truvada HIV prevention pill
Results of two new studies have shown that Truvada, a pill that can prevent spread of HIV, is promising in real world. The pill has been found capable of stopping HIV infections before they start spreading.
HIV has been a serious problem for the United States and rest of the world from a long time. According to reports, more than one million people in America get infected with HIV every year. About 13% of the infected individuals do not know about the infection, and unknowingly spread the disease.
Now, the new pill, Truvada, has showed promising results to stop the spread of the disease. The pill has already received approval in the United States. An early study has shown that the pill is able to reduce the disease's spread by about 92%. If the pill succeeds in delivering such promising results, experts believe the spread of the disease will be slowed.
The two new studies have shown that the pill is effective in real world too. In one of the study, researchers asked more than 600 adults to taken the pill daily. The researchers said that not even a single participant was found infected with the HIV virus. Another study, conducted in the UK, also provided promising results. Both the studies had included gay men.
As per the Center for Disease Control, "Men who have sex with men (MSM) suffer the highest rates of HIV. In 2010 MSM accounted for approximately 29,800 of those who were infected with HIV. This number represents a 12 percent increase from 2008".
