Boeing aiming to have its soon-to-be-flown spaceships in air and space by 2017
Last Friday, Boeing revealed its latest assembly plant in Florida, which is going to build spaceships. By 2017, Boeing is looking forward to have its soon-to-be-flown spaceships in the air and space.
The spaceships, named the CST-100 Starliner, are likely to be the first commercial spacecrafts in the market, though Boeing and SpaceX are in a tight race.
NASA is spending a large amount of money for the collaboration with Boeing. It would be paying an estimated $4.2 billion dollars for seeing the spacecraft development through the test phase and first six flights. At the time of these flights, it is expected that Boeing will deliver astronauts to the International Space Station.
Boeing, in spite of the incredible price tag, has already accepted that besides NASA its financial success is going to depend on contracts from customers. Space travel has a lot of potential, it could revolutionize transportation, allow people to travel around the world in fractions of the time of a normal airplane. Until now, space travel is limited almost exclusively to non-commercial exploration. Boeing is looking forward to change that.
However, Boeing is not the only company, which is aiming for the stars as SpaceX has claimed that it will do the similar thing for NASA. SpaceX mentioned that it will do so for only $2.6 billion dollars. The two companies are trying to build space taxis that can deliver 7 space members to the International Space Station.
