Many criticize the ‘Belly Button Challenge’ going viral
Here’s a new challenge called the Belly Button Challenge in which people are trying to reach around their back and touch their belly button.
The trend has been criticized by those people who say that it leads to unhealthy ideas regarding body image.
James Hamblin of the Atlantic wrote in ‘Don’t Try the Belly Button Challenge’, “A successful attempt is met with praise and affirmation, under the pretense that the challenge is a test of health and fitness. You are thin enough to reach around yourself, so you must be OK. An unsuccessful attempt is met with quiet inward shame”.
Hamblin also wrote that in reality, it is a test of shoulder flexibility and it’s not about fitness. He added that the shoulder has the maximum range of motion compared to any joint in the body. The Daily Mail wrote that topic of the challenge was at first position on Weibo.
Marci Warhaft-Nadler wrote at the Huffington Post that it is annoying whenever one of these foolish trends emerges; however, he feels deeply sad when millions of people go for such things and get affected and start feeling about themselves accordingly. He added that it is scary that a number of people don’t realize the danger these fads can impose on anyone dealing with an eating disorder.
According to experts, teens consider it as an ideal body shape as it can lead to self-esteem issues that could lead to depression, eating disorders and even suicide.
