Cornwall has Low HPV Jab Uptake

Across the nation, the HPV jab for cervical cancer is offered to 12 to 13 year olds in schools. But the proportion of youngsters' uptake of the vaccine in Cornwall is still low.

In Cornwall, HPV uptake is just 57% in comparison to 73% nationally. Robert Music, Chief Executive at Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, said that it is a high time now that Cornwall's uptake should increase.

"There is an issue for those girls because if they do not have the vaccine then they are more at risk most certainly because they are not having the vaccine that can prevent two thirds of all cervical cancers", said Music.

Now, the jab program has been started at schools as well. As per Music, the school-based program is the most effective way to contact as many as youngsters as well. Cornwall is quite rural, but Music said that there are many other parts of the UK that are also rural, but they have registered successful school-based programs.

NHS England and Public Health England stated that a review of the data on HPV vaccine uptake is underway. The review helps in knowing whether the model of delivery is effective or not than other model.

On regular basis, NHS England reviews the performance of immunization programs. Experts said being a rural county coupled with a number of factors, a school-based model is more challenging in Cornwall than in many other parts of the nation.

But it cannot be ignored that HPV vaccination provides against strains of the virus that lead to most cases of cervical cancer.
