Bogus IRS Returns continue to Trouble Taxpayers
Just one week is left to file income tax returns, but according to some reports, people have been facing trouble while submitting electronic tax return. Eric George said that he has been using the same tax preparer for more than two decades. Last month, when his tax preparer submitted his electronic tax return, the IRS replied that there was an error.
According to George, it showed that someone already submitted an electronic return on his behalf. George said that electronic tax return was submitted by using George's taxpayer identification number and his Social Security number. It means that George's identity and filed a tax return was stolen by someone. Currently, IRS was unable to stop bogus returns.
George said that earlier, he received a letter from Anthem, health insurer, which stated that someone had stolen information from Anthem's computers. As per the letter, the private information of its current and former clients was stolen in December last year. George was not the first who received a 10-page letter from Anthem, as there were many people who got the same letter.
In the letter, Anthem wrote many tips on identity protection services. It also promised to provide free credit monitoring. When Anthem was asked about how many people have been using free credit monitoring service, it didn't immediately provide the number.
According to George, he also received a letter from the Indiana Department of Revenue, which stated that it had received his electronic state filing, but George said that he hadn't done that. Indiana caught and cancelled the bogus filing. George said, "The state did a great job".
After that, George had a lot of tasks to do. First of all, he had to file a police report and complaint with the FTC. He also had to file an identity theft affidavit for the IRS and submit a paper copy of his return. According to George, he talked to IRS officials and they said that they are working to catch the crooks filing bogus returns.
