White House Science Fair to showcase children’s talent
On Monday, a man, who suffered from a spinal disorder since birth and underwent over a dozen surgeries till now, will meet with President Barack Obama at the White House. He will present a new type of spinal implant invented by him, which will help others fight such condition.
President Barack Obama is always interested in the White House Science Fair as it brings many surprises from school going children. At last year’s event, Obama said that he loves the event and it is one of his favorite events of the year.
The event includes many serious innovations along with fun and games. Each year, the event showcases great inventions; the Safe & Sound smartphone app was developed by an all-girl team from Washington State. The app was developed in order to help cut suicides and school shooting cases committed by teenagers.
The Verizon Foundation awarded a $20,000 prize to Safe & Sound. The Android app is planned to be offered for free in the Google Play online store. A 17-year-old team member Chloe Westphal, involved in app development, considers the White House spotlight really important.
According to her, "After you've done this, you feel like you could do anything. I can say, 'I just talked with the president, I don't need to be shy around anyone".
The White House makes use of the science fair in order to emphasize on the administration's support of science, technology, engineering and math education. And this is a broad field called STEM. Obama will be making announcement of a fresh batch of STEM initiatives at event to be organized on Monday. The event motivates more children, particularly the groups which haven’t got opportunity to show their talent.
