India’s Alphonso mango may soon become available in Mauritius

India’s Alphonso mango may soon become available in MauritiusIndia may soon be able to export its delicious Alphonso mango to the island nation of Mauritius as the two sides have agreed to harmonize norms governing trade of fruits.

India currently can not export its mango to Mauritius because the fruit has so far failed to obtain the sanitary and phyto-sanitary clearance from the country.

Commerce & Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who is in Mauritius to participate the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation (IOR-ARC) Economic & Business Conference, raised the issue in a meeting with Mauritius' commerce minister Sayyad Abd-Al-Cader Sayed Hossen.

Speaking on the topic, an Indian commerce department official said, "APEDA and the Mauritius SPS authority officials will soon meet and work for harmonisation of standards."

India's inability to export mangoes to Mauritius has been along countries like Pakistan to cash on the situation by capturing a large market share.

Mr. Sharma also raised the adulteration issues that have been hampering exports of basmati to Mauritius. Shipments of basmati rice from India to the island nation have been on the decline. Last April, Mauritius had reported that basmati rice from India was being adulterated by local traders.

Currently, India's exports to Mauritius comprises mainly of petroleum products, which account for nearly three quarters of the total exports.
