Indian cruise missile test sees mixed success
A test of India's indigenously developed medium range sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' saw only missed success after the flight was terminated midway as it deviated from tis desired path.
Officials at the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) said that the all the mission objectives were met even as the whole range capability was not achieved during the test. Nirbhay was launched at 11:50 am today from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore.
The mission was aborted after a successful launch as scientists realized that the flight has deviated from its path in order to ensure coastal safety. Nirbhay, which means fearless in Hindi, will be an important addition to the country's defence arsenal. The officials are yet to release the official report on the outcome of the results of the tests.
Nirbhay has a range of 1,000 kms and flies like an aircraft. It has been under development since 2007 and the officials have built-in good loitering capability, control and guidance as well as a high degree of impact and impressive stealth features.
The missile has been developed by scientists at the Aeronautical Development Establishment, a Defence Research and Development Organisation laboratory based at Bangalore.
