EMC strengthening its RSA security division with Silver Tail Systems acquisition

The bigwig multinational in big data and cloud storage, EMC Corporation, is apparently looking to strengthen its RSA security unit with its planned acquisition of Silver Tail Systems --- a startup which chiefly focuses on big data; and has real-time prognostic analytics in place for the detection as well as prevention of online fraud and crime.

The software used by the 2008-founded, Menlo Park, California-based Silver Tail Systems can effectively detect malicious activity by monitoring and scrutinizing the behavior of the site visitors. The customers of the company - which can track more than 300,000 clicks per second - include a number of large banking and e-commerce sites.

With enterprise-level clients like banks, governments, and retailers comprising the majority of EMC's customers, the company's planned acquisition of Silver Tail Systems is a notably strategic move.

The acquisition - which will likely close in the next three months' time; though the financial terms remain undisclosed - is in line with the series of acquisitions which the 1979-founded EMC has undertaken since 2001 to grow rapidly in emerging areas of technology, including content management, storage, security, and virtualization.

About the Silver Tail Systems' acquisition, EMC's RSA security division chief Art Coviello said in a press release that the company sees "tremendous opportunity with Silver Tail at the intersection of big data and security . to help our customers gain better visibility and control risk."
