The central government in India has revoked a ban on sending bulk SMSes and MMSes in the country on Thursday.

The ban was imposed to curb the rumors that terrorized the persons of north eastern region and resulted in an unprecedented exodus of them from various cities including Bangalore, Chennai, Hydrabad and others.

Home ministry spokesperson K. S. Dhatwalia said that the restrictions placed by the government on sending bulk SMSes and MMSes have been lifted. The government has already issued a notification in this regard.

Initially the government restricted the number of SMSes to 20 and up to 20 KB of data through mobile phones on 17 August. The government later revised the ban and increased the limit to 20 messages a day on 23 August. Finally the government lifted the ban and the mobile phone users are allowed to send mass SMSes and MMSes.

“The date of sale of SIM and activation of SIM is required to be established from the entries in the CAF. For this purpose, entry of date is to be made with the signature of subscriber at the time of filing of CAF,” the DoT said.
