Car sales rise 78 percent to 497,959 vehicles in Japan
According to the latest data released, the total sales of new cars, trucks and buses excluding 660cc minivehicles increased by an impressive 78 percent to 497,959 vehicles in Japan.
The sales of minivehicle sales increased 60.5 percent to 253,929. The biggest monthly growth on record came on a below year, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. In the previous year, the producers were struggling due to the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 in northeastern part of the country.
The earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 forced manufacturers to cut production and reduce supply in the market. The sales of Toyota Motor Corp doubled to 231,358 vehicles in March while Nissan Motor Co posted a 78 percent rise and Honda Motor Co grew by 55 percent. The total non-minivehicle sales rose 3.1 percent to 3,064,336.
Michiro Saito, an official at the industry association said, "Sales were also helped by the government's reinstatement of subsidies to replace clunkers, which boosted demand for hybrid cars such as Prius, Alpha and Fit."
The recovery occurred as the automakers resumed higher production levels in factories in the country.
