Queensland citizens to get free diabetes tests
Queensland residents will soon be offering to come on the shelves of local pharmacist for free diabetes tests.
Premier Anna Bligh has pronounced on Sunday a $7.5 million scheme that will witness free pin-prick tests at pharmacies by March.
Ms Bligh told reporters said, "Type 2 diabetes is on the rise and it a silent thief, it can steal lives. Our government is absolutely determined to reduce the incidence. If we catch this disease early, we have a much better chance of helping people get over the worst effects of it. This little test could save a life."
Type 2 diabetes might offer serious complications such as blindness, kidney failure and amputation and at the same time increases sufferings of heart disease and stroke.
Nearly 20 years ago, two per cent of new renal dialysis patients in Australia were suffering from diabetes and the current stats speaks of 30 per cent.
Full hospital dialysis at the Queensland public hospital is priced at $75,000 per patient each year.
Health Minister Paul Lucas explained that the issue is going to get bad, with type 2 diabetes the fastest-growing chronic disease in Australia.
Mr Lucas stated:"By 2016, poor diet, inactivity and rising obesity is predicted to fuel a 17 per cent increase in the burden of type 2 diabetes. So consequently the cost to the community as well as to the individual of this epidemic is significant."
