Authorities have said that U. S. Army Maj. Charles E. Sublett pleaded guilty in Memphis on Wednesday to federal charges arising from the smuggling of cash out of Iraq.

The U. S. attorney's office said in a statement that Sublett, 46, of Huntsville, Ala., admitted that in January 2005 he lied about the value of a package he mailed from Iraq, where he was deployed, to the United States, knowing it contained $107,900 in U. S. currency and 17.12 million Iraqi dinars (about $14,500).

Sublett was arrested in Huntsville and indicted by a federal grand jury in January.

It has also been reported that he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced Oct. 8.

Sublett, as part of his plea agreement, consented to the forfeiture of the money he concealed in the package. (With Inputs from Agencies)
