Autistic children suffers prejudice by Schools

My-Name-Is-KhanNo longer autism is an unfamiliar word soon after the release of movie 'My Name is Khan' in which Shahrukh Khan had performed a character who is suffering from autism. The movie has created awareness among the people regarding this disorder but our society is still in the impression of not accepting these children as a part and parcel of their normal surroundings.

Autistic children have to face several prejudice by different sections of the society, one of them is School. Education Board encourages the admission of autistic children in schools but school authorities are not accepting these children. However, experts hold opinion that if these children are provided with proper care, guidance, and support they can even confirm excellence in their respective fields.

Poonam Kalra, the activity coordinator of Darpan School an institute for autistic children, said, we must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. She said that despite of so many advantages given to autistic children the situation remain same as it was years back. Kalra strongly believed that we should organize various camps in different school to create awareness on the subject of autism and encourage schools to treat these children at par with others. Recently, Darpan organized a camp at Delhi Public School on Thursday, Kalra said that through these camps we would like to inform the people about autism and we would be delighted even if we can change small number of people's opinion among the massive crowd.

She also expressed that Schools show that they understood this disorder but when it move towards admitting the child they deny. Although Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced various guidelines to protect and support these children but nobody is following the rules as if rules are meant to be broken.

Amarjeet, the centre head of Optimising Development in Education (ODE), a school for kids suffering from learning disability, said, Autism occurs in 20 in 10,000 people and 80% of them are boys throughout the world. She held that even if schools give admission to these children, authorities do not abide by the guidelines given by the Central Board of Education and sooner or later these children face harassment by teachers and their fellow students who call them 'dumb'.

She said that, it is very important to identify the intelligence of autistic kids and recognize their strong and weak attributes. Autistic children need behavior modification to some extent, and they avoid eye contact. These children can progress if proper and consistent care, participation and concern are shown to them.

A senior teacher of a private school said, autistic children are not a problem but treating them equally with other children is the matter of concern. We should employ trained staff to help these children to grow properly.
