Akio Toyoda plans US visit in March in the wake of recall investigations
Toyoda Motors President Akio Toyoda will make a visit to the US in early March and has cancelled the scheduled flight on February 10 because of severe snowstorm in the Northern Hemisphere, said Mieko Iwasaki, spokeswoman Toyota.
However, Toyota didn’t confirm whether or not Toyoda would be available to answer the congressional hearings probing the safety recalls.
US Republican Darrell Issa (California), on the House Oversight and Government committee invited Toyoda for a hearing on February 24 and said another hearing could be held for February 25 and March 2. Issa also said that he was in the favor of a subpoena to force his appearance.
Meanwhile in a startling revelation, it has come to the notice that former employee of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hired by Toyota Motor Corp. helped obstruct investigations of unintended acceleration in at least four previous occasions, to avoid any sorts of recalls.
Christopher Tinto, Vice president of regulatory affairs in Toyota’s Washington office, and Christopher Santucci, joined Toyota directly from NHTSA, joined in 1994 and 2003, respectively.
