Amer Fort steeped in art buzz

Jaipur, Mar 01 : A few miles from state capital Jaipur, is located the 16th-century Amer Fort, which has become a hot tourist destination for thousands of domestic and foreign visitors.

Tourists not only enjoy shopping here but also like to watch craftsmen crafting items in attractive colours.

"We've never seen something like this before and I think it’s amazing to watch the craftsmanship. We are surprised to see how they make these items so beautiful," said Ruby Kochar, a visitor from Dubai. Jane, a foreign tourist said, "I think it's impressive. There should be some more displays like this." The market helps local artisans to sell their products at a good bargain. "The best part is that we get a good price from foreign tourists. Tourists pay rupees 100 to see the showroom. Sitting here the entire day gets us good money,' said Pritviraj, a sandalwood craftsman.

The artisans are allotted spaces in the fort by the State government, which aims to attract a greater number of tourists to the Fort.

Amer Fort is one of the five Indian heritage sites included in the World Monuments list for 2008. Rajasthan is a home to magnificent palaces, forts, sand dunes and wildlife. This rich culture witnesses a tourism spurt every year. (ANI)
