Dramatic Episode Before AIIMS Conference

AIIMS Director P Venugopal
New Delhi: The conflict between Health Minister A Ramadoss and AIIMS Director P Venugopal adopted yet a new spiteful turn on Wednesday, with the well-known heart surgeon walking out without attending the conference when the members did not authorize the additional doctors’ list passed on by him at the last moment to attend the meeting.

In turn, the Governing Body Meeting (GBM) expressed strong disapproval of Mr. Venugopal for not abiding by its decisions.

The meeting of the AIIMS management at Nirman Bhawan started amidst high drama as P Venugopal arrived there in company with 15 faculty members and private staff, asserting that they should also be permitted to attend the meeting.

However, the security force stated only those people whose names were on a participants list provided to them would be allowable to get into the meeting led by Ramadoss, who is also the AIIMS President.

Venugopal was, however, adamant that the people accompanying him should be permitted into the meeting as they chaired different committees at AIIMS and would answer the several queries of the administration. After waiting for about 20 minutes, Venugopal returned.

The GBM that continued without Venugopal, condemned him for rebelliousness, rowdiness and noncompliance.

Congress MP R K Dhawan, who is one of the members, said the 11-member Governing Body was of the decision that the violation of its judgments was highly irregular, amounting to unruliness and insubordination and not expected of a public servant, especially of a person holding such a high office.
