Suspected US missile strike kills 10 in Pakistan
Islamabad - At least 10 people were killed on Monday in a suspected US missile strike on Pakistan's north-western tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said.
The attack was believed to be carried out by US unmanned aircraft that targeted a suspected militant hideout in Sadda area of Kurram tribal district.
Two missiles destroyed a house where Taliban militants were holding a meeting, according to a local intelligence official.
"Casualty figures are a bit sketchy, but informants in their initial reports say at least 10 militants were killed and around a dozen were wounded," the official said on condition of anonymity.
The attack came two days after a similar aerial strike on a building in South Waziristan tribal district killed at least 30 people, including some key allies of top militant commander, Baitullah Mehsud.
If confirmed, Monday's attack would be the first US drone strike on Kurram, a relatively calmer district in Pakistan's tribal region that is considered a hotbed of al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. (dpa)
