New York To Ban Sale of Powdered Alcohol

New York ill very soon join the list of states that have put a ban on powdered alcohol. Although powered alcohol is not available for sale in open market, nearly two dozen states have already acted to ban it either temporarily or outright.

The product is being produced by a company with a name of 'Palcohol'. As per officials this concept of freeze-dried or dehydrated alcohol that can either be consumed direct or mixed with water to produce a drink has been around now for decades.

It has been said that in the beginning of this year, the company responsible in manufacture of the Palcohol got the approval of the Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) for its labels.

This was the last regulatory step which the company essentially needed before the product could be sold in stores. Now the state is opposing its sale fearing that powered alcohol will make underage and binge drinking more easier.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement March that it has no legal authority to ban Palcohol from entering the market because the TTB has the authority to review the formulation and labeling of distilled spirits products.

The agency said in a statement, "The FDA concluded that the use of ingredients in the proposed products was in compliance with FDA's regulations. The agency notes that the ingredients used in the products are typical of ingredients found in many processed foods".

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) after signing legislation banning powdered alcohol sales in New York on Friday mentioned in a statement that powdered alcohol can lead to unsafe levels of intoxication if it is mixed incorrectly or ingested in its powdered form.
