New Study Explains How Little Ice Age Made or Broke an Empire in History
Countless studies on climate change have already warned that human civilization is going to face a tough phase in future if we don’t take strict actions today. But a new study has linked the Little Ice Age to alteration in history.
There is an association between Little Ice Age, a period of cooling in 536, 540, and 547 AD, and historical events, like the Arab Empire’s rise and Eastern Roman Empire’s fall, as per the study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
As per historians, Asia and Europe faced the dramatic social change at the same time. Events like pandemic plague outbreak and migration of Slaves jolted Europe, while food shortage was an issue of all regions of the globe. It also included change of Chinese dynasties and fall of Eastern Roman Empire.
There are no solid proofs which could prove that climate change was linked to these historic events, but scientists speculate that a link between the two is possible. “Ultimately, there can be very little doubt that these sorts of abrupt climatic events place great stress on societies, and can sometimes tip them over the edge”, said Francis Ludlow, a geographer at Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin.
It is believed that loss of land during the Mini Ice Aged led to the fall of the Roman Empire. Shorter growing seasons affected many regions of the world and led to deadly human diseases. According to historians, it wasn’t just Europe, but great political turmoil was also seen in central Asia during the same period.
Authors of the study said that there were many disadvantages of that period, but there were winning impacts too. The Islamic Empire saw a rise during the Mini Ice Age. The Arabian Peninsula saw scrub vegetation growth that time, the authors explained.
