NASA confuses the moon with the sun in a recently shared photo
On Tuesday, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has posted a picture on NASA’s official twitter account in which he has claimed that the sun and earth can both be seen in the image. But in reality, it is not the sun, but the moon.
It is not the first time when it has happened, as NASA also confused the sun and the moon in another photo that also posted by Kelly early this summer. At that time, the space agency has mislabelled the moon as the sun when the ISS flew above the western US.
It is can be quite confusing to differentiate between the sun and the moon. But there is one hint as which are the stars that are seen surrounding the bright object. If it is the sun then one cannot see other stars. But in the case of the moon, astronauts are able to see many stars.
In the current image, the moon may look like star-like owing to the photo’s long exposure. In addition, a composite of 5 images have been taken that shows the ISS cross the sun’s face. The images have been taken on September 6 from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
The photos taken by NASA photographer Bill Ingalls show a transit of the ISS across the solar disk. Transits that provide more than aesthetic appeal do not last very long.
