Murder charges filed in deadly bomb attacks in Sochi

RussiaMoscow - Murder charges were filed Wednesday against two suspects in connection with a series of bomb attacks in the city of Sochi, the venue of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The two men, who have already made admissions, were charged in the deaths of 5 persons and in injuring 19 others with home-made explosive devices, investigators said, the Itar-Tass agency reported.

Investigators said the two, a camera man and a member of the militia, gave an inferiority complex as their motive behind the series of blasts which took place on a beach, in a park, and in a number of interior apartment building courtyards.

The suspects set off a total of seven bombs between April 2008 and February 2009. The devices were concealed in such objects as cigar boxes, a handbag, and a beer can.

In the initial investigations, police had suspected environmental activists or groups opposed to Sochi as the venue for the Olympics, amid controversy over residents having their homes and properties confiscated to make way for construction of Olympic facilities.(dpa)
