Merkel, Zapatero and other leaders arrive in Lima for summitLima - European leaders including, Angela Merkel of Germany, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain and Francois Fillon of France arrived in Lima Thursday, ahead of the European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean summit on Friday and Saturday.

Latin American presidents Alvaro Colom of Guatemala and Nicanor Duarte of Paraguay, as well as Paraguayan president-elect Fernando Lugo, also arrived in the Peruvian capital for the summit focused on poverty relief and the fight against climate change.

Prime ministers Janez Jansa of Slovenia, Donald Tusk of Poland and Jan Peter Balkenende of the Netherlands, were also in Lima by Thursday afternoon.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said the summit will seek to set a "definitive political road map" for European trade deals with the Latin American and the Caribbean blocs.

"I think that is a call that can happen in Lima and I am sure it will happen: that political commitment from the 60 countries of being able to definitively negotiate regional deals, be it with the Andean Community, with Central America or with Mercosur, and to launch political and economic development with the Caribbean," Moratinos said in a press conference.
