Maruti Suzuki, on Tuesday, said that it has become the first automobile company in the country to be able to sell a million cars in a year. Maruti Suzuki is the largest automobile making company in India.

It also said that it would be investing Rs. 17 billion in its Manesar plants. This is being done to expand the capacity so that it is able to produce 2.5 lakh cars every year. After the investment, the plant will be producing 550,000 more cars every year in two years time, said the company.

Meanwhile, after touching the million mark, Maruti Suzuki has made its place amongst the top automakers of the world like Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen, Ford, Honda, Renault and Nissan.

The company in its statement said that the millionth car was a glistening red Maruti Suzuki Swift. It was manufactured in Manesar plant.

Maruti also a production unit is Gurgaon and can produce 700,000 units.

During the period between April 2009 and February 2010, the company made 923,242 units. Out of this, 131,982 were exported while 791,260 cars were consumed within the country.
