Mamata Banerjee seeks private investment for India Railways
The Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has anticipated receiving some private investments for her ministry. She has invited private companies to invest in the largest rail network of the country. Since its establishment, rail has been the unique and single Govt. entity. Indian Railways has the monopoly in the rail network in India. It carries around 1.8 million passengers every day.
The private companies have never entered in to this sector like aviation and other services. However, now the Railway Minister wants to bring Public-Private -Partnership (PPP) in the building infrastructure in the states.
There was a debate over the Appropriation Bill for the Railways in the Lok Sabha and Mamata was replying to various questions from the members. She has informed that Railways has pending projects worth over Rs. 1 lakh crore in various states due to shortage of funds. She has requested the State Governments to come forward and participate in the wagon building projects.
She has also said that the projects like colorful trains, coaches will be possible if the private companies will come up to be a part of this network.
