Malaysian forces on alert over threats of Indonesian spears
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's security forces have been placed on alert following a threat by an Indonesian nationalist group which claimed it would launch a massive attack on Malaysians Thursday.
The Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat, or Bendera, reportedly said last month it had amassed bows and arrows, samurai swords and bamboo spears for an invasion of Malaysia, as retaliation for all the "wrongs" that Malaysia had done.
The group reportedly gained the support of more than 1,000 Indonesians for its cause to "kill Malaysians" on October 8, the official Bernama news agency said Thursday.
While the report has been dismissed by both Indonesian and Malaysian authorities as the ramblings of a fanatical group, Malaysian security forces have intensified patrols around the country.
Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Abu Seman Yusop said no security threat to the country and its people would be taken lightly.
"Our security forces are on alert. They are ready and prepared to meet whatever threats that may come our way. We are always on guard," he said.
Police in the eastern state of Sarawak, which borders Indonesia's Kalimantan province, said border police have stepped up security.
However, security forces nationwide have not reported any signs of violence or trouble.
Malaysia and Indonesia share a common political and ethnic history, but recent years have seen a strain in relations due to allegations that Indonesian workers are abused in Malaysia, and that the Malaysian government has "hijacked" Indonesian heritage and culture as its own. (dpa)
