Listeria: A Major Concern!

CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) at Ottawa has warned people prone to Listeriosis: A Major Concern! allergies due to egg, milk, and soy, to not consume certain products produced, by Baltic Bread Products of Hamilton. 

Baltic Bread bakery products with expiring dates up to and including Sept. 21 2008 are of major concern, as most of these products contain egg, milk and soy which are not displayed on the label. 

The list of products consists of Babka European Style Coffee Cake / 400g / UPC 0 64292 00221 0 / contains milk, the Best Apple Pie / 450g / UPC 0 64292 10212 5 / contains egg and milk, Danish Pastries / 250g / UPC 0 64292 10219 4 / contains soy.

CFIA has recalled 31 products, as these may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria, manufactured by a Newfoundland and Labrador-based company. Although there have been no illnesses reported as yet due to these products. Listerosis is characterized by high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness, and nausea. 

Smith's Snack Service Ltd. of Norman's Cove, N.L., is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall, distributed in Newfoundland and Labrador. The products have the UPC code 623858.

In august, a listerosis outbreak lead to death of 17 due to consumption of food products manufactured by, Maple Leaf plant in Toronto Maple Company’s CEO, Michael McCain, announced the reopening of plant but assured that production is being phased in and tests will be completed and only after CFIA approval the products will be sold
