Light Exercises With Supplements - Key To Active Life For Elderly!
A recent research has shown that a combination of low-level exercise with a body-building supplement can increase the level of activeness in elderly. This research was done by the researchers at the Manchester Metropolitan University.
For this research, scientists analyzed the data collected from 80 men and women aged between 65 and 92. These elderly were asked to do different types of physical activities. Some did weights at the gym, tai chi, stood on one leg with their eyes closed to improve balance while others went for short walks. Amount of physical effort required in these activities differed. Some of the study subjects took Lucozade (a sweet beverage) before exercising and a protein supplement drink after finishing.
Researchers found that after three months all study subjects showed improvement in their general health. Researchers found out that the biggest difference was among those who had done the least strenuous exercise and had taken Lucozade and the protein drink. These people had lost more weight and built more muscle and were more flexible than any of the others. Even elderly who had done more strenuous exercise while supplementing their diet showed less improvement as compared to group doing less strenuous exercise with supplementing diet.
Lead researcher, Dr Gladys Pearson said: "We give advice that if you are going to be gardening, have a glass of orange juice beforehand. Straight afterwards, have a steak or some milk because this is the time when the body is ready and raring to take up protein."
Researchers concluded that elderly should take light exercise regularly. Elderly should take glucose drinks and fruit juice before doing any physical activity. Carbohydrates, available in glucose drinks and fruit juice provide energy for the task. Intake of protein rich diet after the physical activity will lead to great improvement in general health of the elderly.
