Liberhan panel gets 47th extension
The term of Liberhan panel is further extended by the government for six months. The commission is set up to probe the demolition of Babri mosque on December 6, 1992. The commission headed by justice MS Liberhan and it is the 47th extension to the commission. The Liberhan panel was to its report before September 30. The commission is the longest ever serving commission under the Commission of Enquiry Act following its further extension for six months.
The penal headed by Justice Liberhan had closed the recording of evidence of witnesses on June 3, 2005 and surprisingly it is writing its final report since past two years. The commission suffered too much delay as former chief minister of UP, Kalyan Singh is not appearing to record his statements. He is a prime accused in the babri Mosque demolition case. He appeared before the commission only after the intervention of Delhi high court.
The commission conducted its business in 400 sittings so far. It recorded statements of 14 defense witnesses, 53 central government witnesses and 34 commission witnesses during its probe period. Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, BJP leaders LK Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharati and Vinay Katiyar are among prominent leaders that appeared before the Liberhan panel.
