Koirala promises to fulfil demands of Nepal's Madhesi community

Kathmandu, Nov 16: Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today held discussions with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) President Upendra Yadav on the ethnic community's demands.

Koirala has promised to fulfil the Madhesi demands, including more representation for them in different organs of the State.

The meeting took place in the wake of warnings by Upendra Yadav to re-launch agitation in Terai plains from November 21.

Last year, an agitation led by Upendra Yadav in the Terai plains, subsided only after the government agreed to change the constitution to increase seats for Madhes region (parts of eastern and central Terai), and assured proportional representation for Madhesi community in all organs of the state.

The cancellation of Constituent Assembly elections, which were earlier scheduled for November 22, and the non-implementation of the government-MJF pact were compelling Madhesis to resume agitation, said Yadav.

The MJF has been demanding that the pact signed in August should be implemented fully. (ANI)
