Internet allows people a chance to be heard, says Sibbal
India's union communications and information technology minister, Kapil Sibal has said that the internet is an important medium that allows people to be voice their opinions.
Sibal has said that the internet tolls must be used for the empowerment of the people around the world and not for creating disruptions. He said that the internet is the biggest transformative and important forum for the people. It added that it is necessary for India and provides a chance for the people to express themselves.
While speaking at the Google's Big Tent Activate Summit, he said that the internet has emerged as a powerful medium and it is difficult to govern the people on the internet and thus the rules will have to be self-imposed. He added that the internet should be sued for talking on a daily basis but there should be self-imposed rules for the use of this powerful medium.
"This is the ultimate analysis, the medium is for empowerment, it is not for disruption. Any technology can be used in any way, like an atom can create electricity or have Hiroshima. It's the atom that provides the solution. The Internet is that kind of energy of millions of atoms. Those atoms should be used for the good of mankind," he said.
He described Internet governance as an oxymoron adding that the users cannot be governed on the internet and the rules must be self-imposed. The Big Tent Activate Summit is being organised for discussing the impact of Internet on economy, politics, culture and society in India and related issues.
