Baghdad  - Armed insurgents killed four soldiers in an overnight attack in northern Iraq, Iraqi security officials reported Monday morning.

According to the officials, the attack occurred at an army checkpoint along a rural road near the town of Samarra.

Separately, a guard assigned to watch over a mobile phone base station near the city of Kirkuk was killed. According to the Voices of Iraq news agency, a second guard was injured in the attack. (dpa)
