India needs law to stop abuse of social media: Kapil Sibal

India needs law to stop abuse of social media: Kapil SibalWhile some websites are cooperating with the government and have agreed to remove hate content from their pages, most are not paying heed to the government's demands, communications & IT Minister Kapil Sibal said.

Mr. Sibal stressed that the government needed to take strict action against those violating the law, and further stressed that India needed an efficient law to stop the abuse of social media.

Around two weeks back, some miscreants uploaded social networking sites, such as Facebook and YouTube, with inflammatory content with an aim to whip up communal passions and creating a fear psychosis among Northeast Indians. The anti-social elements, which were allegedly working from Pakistan, flooded the pages of several websites with morphed images and hate content, leading to Northeast Indians' mass exodus from different parts of India.

Mr. Sibal said people misusing the technology must be punished, but the country doesn't have any mechanism to do so because there is no censorship on the web.

Speaking on the topic, he said, "We will have to make an attempt . so that an institutional mechanism is fixed and violations do not take place. And if it takes place despite this, there should be a law so that the guilty is punished."

The India has already named Pakistan as the main offender behind hate material, but the Centre is now facing the uphill task of collecting evidence to prove its claim within 90 days, because after that period the data stored on servers will automatically elapse.
