IIM’s should have more of Governmental Control: Panel
A central panel which was devised to review the position of the esteemed B-schools in the country has given its report. According to the panel, the government should have a greater control over the functioning of the Indian Institute of Management, its policy making and overall rendering of the Institute. Suggestion to increase the present number of seats three fold, from 250 to 750 in all the IIMs was also given.
The panel which is headed by R.C.Bhargava suggests that a council of the IIMs should be made which will be led by a government appointed chairman and the council will have a higher authority than the Board of Governors of the individual institutes. The Human Resource Development ministry seems to be sufficed with the recommendations set forth by the panel.
The prestigious B-school of the nation, the IIMs presently have the jurisdiction of setting up its own fee structure and the panel is likely not to intervene for the same but the council can analyze the payable fees which decided by the Board of Governors of the institute.
A member of the panel said, “While an IIM can decide to hike its fees, the council can intervene if it feels the rise is too steep, or that enough measures have not been taken to ensure scholarships for poorer sections.” Thus, the council will not disturb the decision making powers of the Board but will intervene only if the situation demands.
All IIM’s will be having their representative in the council set up by the government along with five other members who will be government officials and a Chairman nominated by the Prime Minister.
