ICRC President Kellenberger: Situation in Gaza "shocking"
Jerusalem - International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) President Jakob Kellenberger described the large number of wounded people in Gaza and the severity of their injuries as "shocking" Wednesday.
"It hurts, when you see those wounded people, and the type of wounds they have," Kellenberger told a news conference in Jerusalem.
He reminded all parties of their obligation under international law to allow aid and rescue workers unhindered access to injured and suffering civilians.
"Three hours are not sufficient," he said, referring to the daily three-hour humanitarian lulls in the fighting Israel has been observing over the past week.
Kellenberger, who visited Gaza Tuesday, on Wednesday toured the southern Israeli town of Sderot, which has come under Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza over the past seven years.
"For the people, especially the children, this experience can be very traumatic," he said of its residents. (dpa)
