Hunter Finds Idaho Mountain Lion with Unusual Deformity
A mountain lion legally hunted by a hunter near the border between Utah and Idaho has baffled experts as the animal has unusual deformity. The lion hunted last week was originally seen on December 30 when it attacked a dog, as per the Idaho Fish and Game.
The same day, a hunter went out and culled the lion. According to the hunter, it had a second set of teeth and whiskers were also in the left side of the animal’s forehead. When authorities inspected the cougar, they concluded that the teeth were growing out of its ear.
They also said that there are possibilities that the second set of teeth could be of a conjoined twin that died in the womb. Some biologists predict a teratoma tumor could be behind the deformity. According to them, it is early to conclude the matter.
“These kinds of tumors are composed of tissue from which teeth, hair, and even fingers and toes can develop. They are rare in humans and animals. Biologists from the southeast region of Idaho Fish and Game have never seen anything like this particular deformity before”, Fish and Game said in a release.
Owner of the dog that was attacked by the mountain lion also saw the beast and said that it was strange feature. It was on its head and was looking very weird, the owner added.
Mountain lions, the species that can weigh about 200 pounds, are Idaho’s native game species. It is legal to harvest the lion, but only licensed hunters are allowed to kill only one lion each year and that too during certain seasons. The lion species usually prey on deer, elk and moose.
