Hospital acquired disease losses eye-opening: US report
Researchers from the center for disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy at Washington-based Resources recently conducted a survey as to what is the death rate of the patients in US hospitals.
The study concluded that as many as 50,000 US medical patients die every year of the hospital picked blood poising and pneumonia. An estimated 48,000 deaths happened in 2006 by the deadly sepsis and pneumonia acquired from the hospital.
Not only it is the loss of lives, an estimated 8.1 billion dollars and 2.3 million extra patients is also what the hospitals have to deal with.
The infections, better known as nosocomial infections, are the maximum picked infections out of the 1.7 million infections that are totally picked from the hospital. These nosocomial infections account for about 1/3rd of these infections. The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. There are 99,000 deaths each year from hospital acquired infections, half of the deaths are due to the nosocomial diseases.
The patient's stay in hospital has been increased by 14 days due to these hospital picked diseases. This has also increased the bill by 46,400 dollars on an average.
