Horror, action films top US box office Eds: Note unusual spelling of Inglourious Basterds
New York - Horror and action films topped the US box office over the weekend, with The Final Destination landing in first place.
The 3D film is the fourth in a series about mysterious deaths and earned 28.3 million dollars in its first weekend in US cinemas. It beat out Quentin Tarantino's Nazi-hunting action film, Inglourious Basterds, which took in 20 million dollars. The film with Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz and Daniel Bruehl earned 37 million dollars last week for its opening.
A horror flick also landed in third place - Halloween II, the remake of the 1978 classic, entered the charts with 17.4 million dollars.
Science fiction thriller District 9 was in fourth place with 10.7 million dollars followed by GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra with 8 million dollars. (dpa)
