New York Sen. Chuck Schumer has warned that Halloween makeup can lead to unexpected consequences. The New York Post reported that Senator Schumer, during a press conference on Sunday, told families about the possible dangers of using face paint manufactured in China.

He said such products often have potentially harmful ingredients, including chromium, nickel, lead, and cobalt.

He added, “Parents are totally clueless as to what they’re putting on their child’s face. If they see it on shelf they think it’s safe, but it’s not. When you buy makeup for your kids, make sure it doesn’t say made in China”. While giving examples, he held up makeup palettes by Rubie’s Costume Company, Wet N’ Wild Fantasy Makers, and Fun World.

Schumer wants the presence of a stricter regulation. He said that he has sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration and has requested for ingredient transparency for the products that don’t show up the toxic ingredients on their packaging. There are a number of companies that could be unaware of the presence of contaminants in their products.

The advocacy group the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released a report, suggesting that all of the face paints tested by them contained lead, and most included the other toxic ingredients Schumer mentioned about. In Canada and Europe, the use of lead in cosmetics is banned but there is no such regulation in the US.
